PIO:

A person of Indian origin (PIO) is a person of Indian origin or ancestry but who is not a citizen of India and is the citizen of another country. A PIO might have been a citizen of India and subsequently taken the citizenship of another country, or have ancestors born in India or other states. A Person of Indian Origin means a citizen of any country (other than Bangladesh or Pakistan), if:

1. He at any time held an Indian passport; or
2.He or either of his parents or grandparents was a citizen of India by virtue of the Constitution of India or the Citizenship Act, 1955 (57 of 1955); or
3.He is a spouse of an Indian citizen, or of a person referred to in (a) or (b) above.

Persons of Indian Origin (PIO) of certain categories who migrated fromIndia and acquired citizenship of a foreign country, other than Pakistan and Bangladesh, are eligible to be granted an OCI as long as their home countries allow dual citizenship in some form or the other under their local laws.
